In a world full of type, what’s so good about Helvetica?

Helvetica, the Swiss typeface developed in 1957 has become, arguably, the most used typeface in the world. There have always been an abundance of different fonts and faces to choose from, so why do we keep going back to Helvetica?

I myself had not come across Helvetica until i started in the design industry, inevitabely spotting its uses from packaging to signage and many logos across the globe. Now when it comes to a new project it’s the first font that gets chosen, but, i do prefer the ultra light version or black, i feel it just gives a sense of individuality in a common world.

So why Helvetica? Well without going into huge depth, i like the way it looks. Many fonts you come across today are either in a certain ‘trend’ i.e. distressed, clean, modern, or completely inadequate. Whereas Helvetica, like, the Aston Martin DB5, is timeless.

I agree with you about the fonts, and the Aston Martin DB5 is a nice car, but it very much is a car of a particular era.
